CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL

"A creative professional is a person who is employed for the extraction of skills in creative endeavors. Creative professions include writing, art, design, theater, television, radio, motion pictures, related crafts, as well as marketing, strategy, some aspects of scientific research and development, product development, some types of teaching and curriculum design, and more. Since many creative professionals (actors and writers, for example) are also employed in secondary professions, estimates of creative professionals are often inaccurate. By some estimates, approximately 10 million US workers are creative professionals; depending upon the depth and breadth of the definition, this estimate may be doubled."

EXCEPTIONAL PERSON -- Allie Lynch

EXCEPTIONAL PERSON -- Allie Lynch --WORKER AT TREADWELLS ICECREAM

While being home in salem MA, for a weekend, i found myself in my usual favorite icecream place.  Treadwells icecream is a family owned buisness which is famous for their 55 plus homemade icecream flavors. Not only is their icecream amazing everytime i have walked into this small but very enjoyable store i have been overwhelmed by the kindness of the workers.  This day i happened to meet a girl a year older then me who had just graduated from UMASS AMHERST, with a degree in graphic design.  Allie was the definition of personable and was eager to learn more about me finding out we had the same interests.  Although Allie had graduated she was part time working at this icecream place in hopes she would soon find her dream job in the design firm.  The advice that Allie had given me was to take charge and to never give up.  Although she does not have a job in the field she wants she is still interviewing weekly and interning to keep her knowledge up to pace so future jobs can see her desire for it.  She told me to take as much experience as you can get and to never let go of an internship or a job because in the long run its all worth it. Graduating on time is not what people look for its WHAT YOU DID to get there.  I learned a lot from meeting this girl and it has made me view my options very differently as i approach my last semester at Hofstra.

unexpected colaboration: cappellini, disney & dror do the tron armchair

Speaking of Tron, an unusual collaboration between Disney and Cappellini has yielded the Tron Armchair, designed by NYC-based Dror Benshetrit. The chair will make its official public debut in just a few hours, at Design Miami/Art Basel.

house industries pop up holiday

HouseIndustriesPopUpShow_01.JPGHouseIndustriesPopUpShow_02.JPG

Andy Cruz and Rick Roat from House Industries were in town today to present their Holiday Pop-Up Show at Partners & Spade with live screen printing by Awesome Dudes. It's no secret we're huge fans, our logo uses their blaktur typeface designed by Ken Barber, and Ken if you're reading, there's Core77 t-shirt headed your way!

Unfortunately this was just a one day event. If you're in LA next weekend you can catch the show at Heath Ceramics opening December 11th, and for the folks in Portland, we carry a selection of House Industries wares at Hand-Eye Supply. It was hard to resist the opportunity to pick up a custom screen printed t-shirt—I ended up getting 3 made—and can highly recommend the Awesome Dudes if you're looking for a good short run t-shirt printer.

hermaphrodite chair by bibier fiuza faustino

hermaphrodite_didier_fiuza_faustino_3.jpg

Fashioned from a single sheet of aluminium, architect Didier Fiuza Faustino's "Hermaphrodite" is a stool concept that reflects the shape of the pelvis. Drawing heavily on saddle making tradition, "Hermaphrodite" is designed to be straddled, rather than merely sat on.

As the name may indeed suggest, this concept is intended to confront the user with their own anatomy and gendered identity—something that, many a gentleman out there may argue, a fair number of poorly designed chairs succeed in doing already.

the benddesk solution to desktop multi-touch

0benddesk.jpg

To paraphrase Steve Jobs, a central problem with multitouch as a desktop user interface is that we need to work with our hands on the horizontal (think of the keyboard, mouse, or tablet on your desk) and view on the vertical (the monitor in front of you). Jobs indicated that Apple testing showed users' arms would become fatigued from constantly reaching out to touch a vertical monitor.

acorn bags: awesome bike bags, not so awesome production means

0acornbags001.jpg

While looking for a place to buy raw leather online for a project I'm working on, I came across Acorn Bags, an anonymous husband-and-wife team who handmake classic-looking saddlebags for bicycles. While they don't sell raw leather, they do sell hand-cut punched leather strapsfor DIY'ers; but for those looking for finished product, they've got some good ones to offer as well. Check out their currently-sold-out Medium Saddlebag, up top, with expandable collar; I'm also a fan of their also-freaking-sold-out Roll Bag, below, for spare tubes and tools, and which can be stacked atop other bags.

Bespoke Innovations uses RP to make prosthetics with style

0bespoinn.jpg

Bespoke Innovations is a San-Francisco-based firm founded by industrial designer Scott Summit and orthopedic surgeon/engineer Dr. Kenneth Trauner. Bespoke is using rapid prototyping to make a product with surprisingly little competition in the marketplace: Personalized prosthetics that not only work well, but look freaking cool.

"A current prosthetic is an amazing piece of engineering and research, but it's half of the equation," says Summit, featured in the NY Times video on rapid prototyping below. "A person is about form and shape and beauty and sensuality. That won't be reached by an assemblage of off-the-shelf mechanical parts."

18k GOLD PLATED PIN BY JUSTIN GIGNAC

security_nodiamonds_440.jpg

NYC based artist Justin Gignac is attempting to do just that with his newly released "Security!" pins. Best know for the Need (and Wants) for Salecollections, Gignac has teamed up with jewellery designer Max Steiner to create this 18k gold-plated "opulent interpretation of the shoplifter's worst enemy".

Much of Gignac's work celebrates the banality of such objects; elevating them momemtarily from their lowly positions (see for example his quite genius "NYC Garbage")—but one has to wonder whether such sumptuousness is the only way to go about this:

beautiful lamps

3D printing company i.materialise has produced some beautiful user-designed lamps using their RP methods, like the three above (designed by Tom Cluckers, Oleg Kurtsev, and the duo of Pieter-Jan Debuyst & Laurens Dekeyser, respectively). Now they're selling a lamp that provides user customization within their own design: The Appear Lamp. Made from polyamide, a material that's like nylon laid down with SLS, the $99 Appear features text of your choosing atop the lamp, and hidden within the lampshade itself; choose the font, type your own phrase, and i.materialise does the rest. The lampshade appears blank until the light's turned on. Check it out here.

CONCRETE LIGHT BULBS ?

0whamodyne001.jpg

By hollowing out a cheapie light bulb, filling it with mortar mix concrete and breaking the glass off, Whamodyne was able to create some seriously heavy-duty hooks with enough bulbousness to hang a heavy coat without having to fumble with hanging loops and hooks. Having perfected the process, he's posted an Instructable of how to do it.

design a new sofa ! that holds everything you need !

0sukima_b2.jpg

Holds books, magazines, your cell phone, the remote, and might even make a good place to store cash for the delivery guy. Pretty sweet, and a damn sight easier than my idea, which was to have a couch with a built-in X-ray machine.
bodykit.jpg

UK product development firm Special Agent introduces their own branded line of performance travel bags titled BodyKit. The series of bags offer transformational wearing styles allowing you to keep your personal items close while actively making your way around the busy city. Take their chest-strapped bulletproof looking bodygrip for example. Imagine you're on your way to that top-secret meeting on the 30th floor of a high rise building, leaping parkour-style from ledge to ledge, with your iPad strapped to your chest. Without breaking a sweat, you unfold your pack into a stylish shoulder bag, assuming your casual identity upon arrival. Relax.

life jacket design competition.

0Life-Jacket.jpg

A rectangle with a hole in it. It's hard to believe someone's designed those, isn't it?

What isn't hard to believe is that boaters don't often wear lifejackets, largely, research indicates, because they're uncomfortable. And 80% of people who drown don't have a lifejacket on.

"The BoatUS Foundation believes that innovation and the application of new technology might entice more boaters to wear life jackets. If you are a creative thinker and have an idea for a new and innovative life jacket your ingenuity may help save lives. We don't have any rules as to what types of materials or designs are allowable. The Foundation wants you to come up with as many new, imaginative and out-of-the-box ideas as you can.

The Winning prize for the most innovative new design is $5,000. Best of all, your design is not required to meet US Coast Guard requirements to qualify or to win! "

Making colors on a webpage is easy, it's all numbers. But the colors that go into magazines, brochures and posters is made the old-fashioned way, with ink. In the following video, a Chief Ink Maker from the Printing Ink Company shows you how powders and varnishes are combined to make their product.

A SYSTEM OF SPACE SAVING FURNITURE

0matroshka001.jpg

The concept is for a system of space-saving furniture that nests together--hence its name, Matroshka, a/k/a the Russian nesting dolls. At its most compressed the system takes up just four square meters but breaks out into permutations including a bed, desk, bookshelf, couch, coffee table, dinner table, wardrobe, clothing drawers, and seating for twelve!

Play Dogh kicks

adidas-white.jpgvintage-side.jpgnikemercurial.jpgadidassole.jpgcarmines.jpgmcfly.jpgadidas-blue.jpgdunk-gum.jpg

Play-Doh Kicks, was not only one of the most fun, but also biggest. Asked readers to sculpt a rendition of their favorite kicks in play-doh as a mini tribute to shoe design (and our childhoods).

With over 100 pairs of play-doh shoes in the closing line-up, the challenge was an especially hard one to judge, as each entry has a lovely character all its own. Wth the help of Woody, editor and founder ofSneaker Freaker, and Kueng-Caputo, Swiss designers and copy experts, we've narrowed one hundred and twenty-one entries down to one grand prizewinner and two honorable mentions, based on that magic combination of fidelity, craftsmanship and interpretation.

thrilled to announce that Flipp82 from Germany has won the grand prize for his interpretation of the Adidas SL 72, combining two colorways in one hyper-detailed model, down to the logo on the tongue of the sneaker and the perforated yellow tread. The thin, light modeling work makes the shoe feel well-worn and loved, which is exactly how we imagine them in their owner's closet. Flipp82 will receive a $100 gift certificate to the new Core77 store, Hand Eye Supply, a copy of Copy by Kueng-Caputo, a lifetime subscription to Sneaker Freaker, and a publication spot in their December issue.

Phone uses heat for power.

ecu-radiate.jpg
Patrick Hyland COPPER PHONE.

Patrick Hyland is working on creating a "charger-free cell phone future." This means that, in addition to lowering electricity consumption, we won't have to mess with annoying chargers anymore and can stop throwing them away (because we won't have them in the first place).

According to Hyland, discarded chargers produce 51,000 tons of waste annually. To address this problem, he's proposed a cell phone that charges with heat. A conductive copper skin transmits heat to a thermogenerator inside, producing electricity when the phone is placed on a radiator or inside a pocket. The skin is engraved with small heatsinks, mimicking a sun-baked, dry earth pattern.
